CANYON, TX -- Western New Mexico University's Women's Volleyball team got off to a fast start in round one of the Lady Buff Classic Friday, defeating Abilene Christian 3-2, but fell in the second game to Metro State by the same score in the nightcap. The Mustangs enter the second day's action at 1-1 on the season.
WNMU will face in-state rival New Mexico Highlands Saturday morning and Adams State in the second game at close out the tournament, hosted by West Texas A&M.
The Mustangs got excellent performances against Abilene Christian by Sophomore Liz Narkon and Meghan Watson (Kailua, HI/Kailua High School). Narkon pounded the Wildcats with 21 kills on 49 attempts, while Watson knocked down 11 kills on 27 attempts with just one error. Jennifer Snowbarger (Oskaloosa, IA/Oskaloosa High School) and Suzie Bruchhauser also accounted for 11 kills on the night.
Defensivly, Lauren Anicker (Kelso, WA/Kelso High School) led the way with 15 digs while Watson and Bruchhauser added nine each.
In the evening game against Metro State, the Mustangs struggled with 35 errors and just 52 kills. Bruchhauser recorded 15 kills and four errors on 38 attempts to pace WNMU.
Freshman Courntney Heiser recorded 100 assists Saturday (42-52) to open her career as a Mustang.
